Why white is harder to make

On black leather a grain irregularity vanishes. On white it is the first thing anyone sees, so more of each hide is set aside and only the cleanest sections are used. Stitching has the same exposure — a seam that wanders slightly is invisible on black and obvious on white.

A uniform pattern doubles the difficulty, because it has twice as many pieces to set symmetrically: two pocket flaps, two pocket bags, two epaulettes, a collar with a stand, a reinforced placket. On leather, no seam can be unpicked without leaving marks. This is the slowest shirt we build.
