What extra length does to a leather garment

Length adds weight, and weight on a leather garment hangs from the shoulders. A longline leather shirt therefore needs either a lighter hide or reinforced shoulder seams, or both, otherwise it drags and distorts within a season. This one uses a light shirt-weight hide with taped shoulder seams for exactly that reason. It also means the shirt falls straight instead of flaring, which is what makes the longline shape work with slim trousers or leggings.

Belted or loose

Worn loose it reads as a long overshirt — relaxed, easy over jeans. Add a belt at the natural waist and the same garment becomes structured, with the lower half falling as a short skirt. Very few pieces do both. If you intend to belt it regularly, choose a soft leather belt rather than a stiff one, which will mark the shirt at the buckle over time.

Care on a longer garment

The hem takes more wear than on a short shirt — it catches on chair edges and car seats. Check the hem stitching once a season and have any loose stitching redone early, before it runs. Hang the shirt on a broad hanger; the extra length makes shoulder distortion from a thin hanger happen faster.
