A quality heavyweight biker jacket has cowhide of at least 1.2 mm, double stitched main seams, solid metal hardware, a full stitched lining and panels cut from single pieces of hide. If any of those are missing, the jacket will not last the way a biker jacket should.

Eight Quality Checks
1. Hide weight
A proper biker jacket uses cowhide between roughly 1.2 mm and 1.6 mm. Anything thinner is a fashion jacket wearing a biker shape. It will look right in photos and feel wrong in your hand.
You can judge this by weight. A heavyweight cowhide biker jacket is genuinely heavy on the shoulders. If it feels light, the hide is thin.
2. The cut edge test
Find an unfinished edge, usually inside a pocket or under the collar. Real leather has a rough, fibrous edge. Bonded leather and PU show a clean edge with fabric backing visible underneath.
3. Stitching density and doubling
Main structural seams, particularly at the shoulders, armholes and side panels, should be double stitched. Count the stitches: roughly eight to ten per inch is right. Long loose stitches mean fast production and seams that will fail.
Check under the arms specifically. That is where stress concentrates and where cheap jackets give way first.
4. Hardware
Zips should be metal, run smoothly along their whole length, and carry a maker's name on the pull. Plastic zip teeth on a heavyweight jacket are a clear sign of corner cutting.
Snap buttons should close with a firm click and stay closed. A snap that opens under light pressure will pop open on the bike.
5. Panel construction
Each main panel should be cut from a single piece of hide. Some makers piece together small offcuts to save material, which creates seams in places that have no structural reason to exist. Extra seams are extra failure points.
6. Lining
A full lining, stitched cleanly at the edges, in polyester, viscose or quilted material. Glued lining, or lining that stops halfway down the sleeve, is a shortcut. Check that the lining is not pulled tight, since a lining under tension tears at the armholes within a year.
7. Collar and cuff behaviour
Fold the collar down and let go. Good leather holds a soft fold and returns. Stiff synthetic or bonded material creases sharply and keeps a hard line. The same test works on the cuffs.
8. Smell
Real leather has a distinct, slightly sweet smell. Synthetics smell of plastic or chemicals. Useless when buying online, decisive in person.
Terms That Mislead
Product descriptions use language that sounds better than it is.
- Genuine leather. Real hide, but a lower split from beneath the top grain. Not the same as full or top grain.
- Bonded leather. Ground leather scraps glued to a backing. Behaves like plastic and peels within a year or two.
- PU leather, vegan leather, leatherette. Synthetic. No hide at all.
- Leather look. Not leather.

What Good Costs
Heavyweight cowhide, double stitched construction, metal hardware and a full lining have a real cost floor. A jacket claiming all of that at a very low price has cut something you cannot see.
That does not mean the most expensive option is automatically the best. A lot of the price on a branded jacket is the badge rather than the build. What you should be paying for is hide weight, stitching and hardware.
Fit Still Decides Everything
The best built jacket in the world looks wrong if the shoulders sit in the wrong place. A biker jacket should fit closer than a fashion jacket when standing, because it is cut for a forward riding position.
