How to store shearling over summer
Four rules. Clean it first — body oils and salt left in the fleece over a warm summer attract moths and degrade the hide. Use a broad hanger so the shoulders keep their shape under the coat's own weight. Give it space in the wardrobe rather than compressing it between other garments, because compressed fleece takes a long time to recover.
And never use a plastic cover. Plastic traps moisture against the hide, and trapped moisture on leather causes mould. If you want it covered, use a breathable cotton garment bag.
Do that and the jacket comes out in October looking as it did in March. Skip it and you will notice the difference within a couple of years.
Why the jacket is worth the effort
Shearling is one sheepskin tanned with the fleece attached: hide outward blocking wind, wool inward trapping air, no separate lining and no seam between them for cold to find. It is the warmest construction in ordinary clothing and it lasts decades when cared for.
The collar straps close the throat against wind, or unbuckle so the collar folds back and the jacket looks entirely different.
