To be clear at the outset: this is a reproduction of the A-2 pattern, made by us as a fashion jacket. It is not government issue, not surplus, not military stock, and it carries no contract labels, insignia, squadron markings or unit patches. What it is, is the wartime A-2 specification made honestly in real leather. It sits in our aviator and pilot leather jackets range.

What the original specification called for

The A-2 was adopted by the US Army Air Corps in 1931 and issued through the Second World War, built to a written specification that named every component: horsehide or goatskin, a knitted wool waistband and cuffs, a shirt-style collar with hidden snap fasteners, two flapped patch pockets, a hook-and-eye throat latch, and a cotton lining. Different manufacturers held different contracts, which is why surviving originals vary in colour and detail while all meeting the same spec. That variation is part of what makes the jacket interesting, and it is also why no reproduction can be called the definitive one.

What we have kept and what we have not

Kept: the cut, the collar, the wind flap, the patch pockets, the knit trims, the short body. Not kept: any contract label, stencilled data block, insignia or painted squadron art — those belong to genuine issued jackets and reproducing them on a commercial garment would misrepresent it.

Ageing

Brown A-2 leather lightens at the shoulders, elbows and front edges while the creases stay dark, so the contrast builds year on year. That is the look people buy the jacket for, and it arrives on its own with wear — no need to force it. A clear conditioner twice a year keeps the hide supple; a pigmented one flattens the developing contrast.

Sizing and made to order
