Why a hood changes the jacket

Most leather jackets are three-season pieces for one reason: they stop at the neck. Wind and rain go straight past the collar. A hood extends the jacket's coverage over the head and the back of the neck, which is where you actually feel cold once the body is protected.

Building a hood on leather

Harder than it sounds. A hood carries weight and pulls backwards on the neckline every time you move, so the collar seam has to be reinforced or the hood drags the jacket off your shoulders. The hood also needs enough structure to hold its shape when down — a flat leather hood collapses into a lump between the shoulder blades.
