First, the honest framing: "authentic" here describes the G-1 pattern, not provenance. This is a commercially made fashion jacket cut to that specification. It is not naval issue, not surplus, and it carries no insignia, name tapes, squadron patches or unit markings, and it has no affiliation with the US Navy or any armed force. What makes a G-1 different from an A-2

They are often confused and they are genuinely different jackets. The G-1 has a shearling or mouton collar, a bi-swing back, and — on most versions — no wind flap over the zip. The A-2 has a leather shirt collar, a plain back, and a wind flap. The G-1 was the naval pattern and the A-2 the army air-force one, and the differences reflect their jobs: the fur collar for open-cockpit and carrier-deck cold, the bi-swing back for reaching and working in a confined space.

The bi-swing back explained

Two pleats set into the back either side of the shoulder blades, which open when you reach forward and close when you relax. It is the same detail found on old shooting and golf jackets, and it exists because leather does not stretch — without it, reaching forward in a fitted leather jacket pulls the whole garment out of place. It is the single most useful feature on any leather jacket you actually work in, and it is worth looking for.

Caring for the collar

The collar is a fur-style mouton or shearling. Brush it occasionally with a soft brush to keep the pile lofted, never wash or soak it, and do not store the jacket with the collar crushed against other garments — a flattened collar rarely fully recovers.
