Why a leather shirt works

A leather shirt does something neither a cotton shirt nor a leather jacket can. It has the shape and formality of a shirt, so it tucks in and layers under a coat, but it has the presence and wind resistance of leather. The front placket is reinforced so the buttonholes do not stretch — buttonholes in leather are the first thing to fail on a badly made leather shirt, so they are cut and finished rather than punched. Cuffs button and the yoke is a separate panel across the shoulders, exactly as on a fabric shirt.

Seams are stitched flat where possible so there is no ridge under a jacket. Buttons are set through reinforced backing.

Fit and styling

The fit is a relaxed shirt cut, not a fitted jacket cut. Take your normal shirt size. If you want it close, size down; leather does not have the ease that woven cotton does, so a snug shirt in leather feels snugger than the same measurement in cotton.
