The stud work

Each stud is pushed through a punched hole in the hide and its prongs folded flat against a backing washer on the reverse. The washer spreads the load so the prongs bear on metal rather than on leather — without it they saw through the hide as the jacket flexes until the stud drops out.

Machine pressing skips that step. Hand setting takes hours, and it is the reason this jacket takes longer to make and costs more than a plain one.

Wearing it

It is heavier than a plain leather jacket, and the weight is what makes it hang correctly rather than drape. Hang it on a wide hanger with space around it — studs mark whatever they are pressed against. Buff the metal dry after damp weather and never soak it.
