This handmade black leather shirt is cut from sheep leather, the hide most suited to shirt making because it is thin, even in grain and flexible enough to fold at a collar without help. It is a plain shirt on purpose — classic collar, button front, straight hem — so the material is the only thing about it that is unusual. Every one is cut and stitched by hand to the size ordered.

Sheep leather explained

Sheep leather (sheepskin with the wool removed and the hide tanned) is thinner and lighter than cow or buffalo hide, with a fine even grain. Those properties are exactly what a shirt needs: enough flexibility to turn a collar and a cuff, and little enough weight that the shirt hangs rather than stands.

It is not the hide for a hard-wearing outer jacket, and we would not claim otherwise. For a shirt worn under a jacket or as a light outer layer, it is the right choice and the traditional one.

Handmade construction

Hand cutting matters more on leather than on cloth because every needle hole is permanent — there is no unpicking a seam and trying again without leaving marks. Panels are eased into the seams rather than pulled, so the shirt does not distort at the shoulder over time.

The collar has a stand so it rolls properly. The placket is reinforced behind the buttonholes, which is the difference between a leather shirt that lasts and one whose front stretches out within a year. Seams are pressed flat so nothing ridges under a jacket.

Fit and styling

Classic regular fit — comfortable rather than close. Take your normal shirt size, or use Custom, which costs nothing extra and is worth taking because leather has no ease to absorb a small error.
