What the ribbing does
The knitted rib at the collar, cuffs and hem is the defining feature of a bomber and it is functional rather than decorative. Rib at the hem pulls the jacket in at the waist so wind cannot get up inside it. Rib at the cuffs seals the wrist. Rib at the collar sits flat against the neck without needing a fastening.
The quality of that rib is the main thing separating a good bomber from a poor one. Cheap ribbing stretches out within a year and stops gripping, at which point the jacket loses its shape entirely. Ours is a dense knit that recovers rather than sagging.
Why the bomber shape works
It sits at the waist, so it does not cut you at an awkward point. It has room through the body without being loose. The shoulders are soft rather than structured, so it does not look like tailoring. And there is nothing on it to date it — the shape has been essentially unchanged since the 1950s.
Practically, it is also the easiest leather jacket to wear over a hoodie or a jumper, because the body has genuine room built in.
Build
Real leather with enough weight to hang properly. The main zip is metal tooth on a reinforced tape. Seams are double stitched and reinforced at the shoulders. Two hand pockets at the hip, an interior chest pocket, and a smooth lining that lets the jacket go on over knitwear without dragging.
Fit and styling
Regular bomber fit. Take your normal size — the pattern already includes room for a jumper or hoodie underneath, so avoid sizing up unless you want it noticeably loose.
