How stretch leather works

Leather itself has almost no elasticity. Stretch leather is made by bonding the hide to a stretch backing layer, so the composite gives in one or both directions while the leather face stays intact. It is the same idea as stretch denim and it works for the same reason.

The practical effect is on movement, not sizing. The trousers still need to be the right size — stretch is not a substitute for fit — but sitting down, climbing stairs and crouching all stop being events.

What to be aware of

Two honest points. First, a stretch-backed leather is not the same as a heavy solid hide, and it is not the construction for hard-wearing outdoor use. Second, hang them rather than folding, because a stretch backing that is creased hard for months can take a set.
