Why faux works better on trousers than on jackets
This is the one garment where synthetic leather has a genuine advantage. Coated fabric is built on a knitted or woven base, and many are made with a small amount of stretch — something real hide can never have.
On trousers that stretch matters enormously. Real leather trousers require careful fitting because they do not give at the thigh or the seat; a faux pair with a little stretch is simply easier to wear, easier to sit in, and far more forgiving of a size that is not exact.
The honest limitations
Faux leather does not age — it stays as it is and then, eventually, cracks or peels at high-flex points. On trousers those points are the knees, the seat and the inner thigh, which flex more than anywhere on a jacket. That means faux trousers have a shorter working life than a faux jacket, and a much shorter one than real leather.
It also breathes less than hide, so it can feel warm in mild weather. And leather conditioner does nothing for it — applying it is a waste and can leave a residue.
