What patent leather is

Patent is a finishing process, not a different hide. A high-gloss coating is applied to real leather at the tannery, cured, and polished, producing a mirror surface the leather itself cannot make. It has been done since the nineteenth century, originally for dress shoes.

Two things follow from that. First, patent does not breathe or soften the way an untreated hide does, so these are dressier and less casual than matte leather trousers. Second, the surface is what you are protecting — scratches show on gloss where they vanish on matte. Wipe with a soft cloth, never anything abrasive, and hang them rather than folding, because a hard crease in a patent finish can craze.
