Buckles rather than a fastening
Buckle straps do two things a zip cannot. They adjust — so the vest fits over a shirt, a gambeson or nothing at all — and they read correctly for the period, since nothing in a medieval or fantasy setting closes with a zip.
Each buckle is set through a reinforced tab so the pull load goes into the leather backing rather than a single layer of hide. Straps are leather rather than webbing.
Two tone construction
The panels use two contrasting leather colours, which is what gives the vest its structure visually — the eye reads the panel lines rather than a flat shape. Two-tone work means every panel edge is a seam, so there is more stitching in this vest than in a single-colour one and every join has to line up.
