What milling does to a hide

After tanning, the hide goes into a large drum and is tumbled for hours. The mechanical action loosens the fibre structure without thinning the leather, so you keep cowhide's thickness and abrasion resistance but lose the board-like stiffness a new cowhide vest usually has.

It also raises the grain into a fine pebbled texture, which is visible up close and is one of the easiest ways to identify genuinely milled leather rather than a hide that has simply been coated to look soft. Because the softness is structural rather than a surface treatment, it does not wear off.

Brown, and how it ages

Brown milled leather ages more visibly than black. The pebbled high points catch light and lighten first, so within a year the vest develops depth and tonal variation that a flat black hide never shows. The edges, shoulders and the area around the pockets go first.

Handmade construction

Cut and stitched by hand to the size ordered. Seams are double stitched with heavy thread. The back is a single clean panel, so patches can be stitched on later without crossing a seam. Hip pockets outside and an interior pocket inside the front. Armholes are bound rather than left raw.

Fit and styling

Regular fit. Take your normal size over a shirt or t-shirt, and size up if it is going over a jacket. Because the leather is soft it moves with you rather than standing away from the body, which is the main practical difference from a stiff new cowhide vest.
