Look at a cut edge. Real hide shows a fibrous, slightly fuzzy edge; a coated synthetic shows a clean fabric backing with a distinct surface layer sitting on top of it. Check inside a pocket or under the hem. Look at the grain. Natural grain is irregular — the pores and creases never repeat. A printed grain repeats, usually every few inches, because it came off a roller. Press it with a thumb. Real leather creases and wrinkles around the pressure and then relaxes; synthetic stays flat and springs straight back. Feel the temperature. Leather warms to your hand within seconds; PU stays cool and slightly plasticky.
