The three fastenings on a proper A-2
The zip does the main work, and on a leather jacket it must be heavy gauge — a light coil zip cannot take the weight of leather panels pulling against the slider. The collar snaps sit hidden under the collar points and hold them flat, so the collar cannot lift in wind or ride up under a harness. The throat latch — a small hook-and-eye or tab at the top of the collar — closes the last gap at the neck when the zip is fully up. That third detail is the one most often left off, and it is the one that makes the difference on a cold day.
Looking after it
Store the jacket zipped, so the front panels are not pulled apart and the zip tape is not loaded diagonally. Wax the zip teeth with candle wax once a year so the slider does not drag — dragging is what splits teeth. Open collar snaps by pulling the leather straight apart rather than sideways, which bends the socket. Clean around every fastening with a dry cloth, never a damp one; moisture at the base of a snap corrodes plating from underneath.
Everything is repairable
A worn zip slider can usually be replaced on its own. A loose snap can be reset in minutes. A hook-and-eye can be re-sewn. None of these require a new jacket, which is worth knowing before replacing one.
