How leather is distressed

Two things happen. The hide is finished with a darker pigment over a lighter base and then rubbed back by hand, so raised areas sit light and creases hold dark. Then the assembled jacket is physically worked — flexed, tumbled, and hand-rubbed at the shoulders, elbows, cuffs and front edges — to break the surface exactly where years of wear would break it. The result is uneven by design. Two jackets from the same run will differ noticeably, and a distressed jacket that looked machine-uniform would be a printed imitation of the effect rather than the effect itself.

What to expect, and what not to worry about

Expect variation in tone across the panels, lighter shoulders and elbows, and dark creasing at the sleeve folds. None of that is a fault. What would be a fault is cracking in the surface, tacky patches, or colour that comes off on a cloth — none of which distressing causes. Do not try to even out the finish with conditioner; a pigmented conditioner will fill the light areas and flatten the whole effect. Use a clear one, sparingly.
