What makes a vest last

Three things, none of them visible in a photograph. The first is hide weight: a vest takes more abrasion than a jacket does, rubbing against seat backs, chair backs and bag straps every day, so the leather has to be substantial. The second is what sits behind the fasteners — a snap or stud set into a single layer of hide will eventually tear out, so each one here goes through a reinforced tab. The third is thread: heavy polyester rather than the lighter thread used on fashion pieces, double stitched at every seam.

None of that shows on a product page, which is exactly why it is the first thing cut on a cheaper vest.

Why black

Black is the practical choice for something worn daily. It does not show the marks that a vest inevitably picks up, it does not need the care a pale hide does, and it does not commit the outfit to anything. Details

Hip pockets outside, an interior pocket inside the front, and bound armholes cut to clear a jacket sleeve. The back is a single clean panel with no seam across it, so patches can be added later without crossing a join.

The hide is chosen firm rather than soft. A soft vest feels good in the shop and sags at the shoulder within a year; a firm one softens with wear and keeps its line.

Fit and styling

Regular fit. Take your normal size to wear over a shirt or t-shirt, and size up if it goes over a leather jacket.
