What chaps actually are

Chaps are leg coverings worn over trousers. They have no seat and no crotch — the two legs are joined only by a belt at the waist, and there is an open gap at the back. That is not a design flaw; it is the entire point. The open back means you can put them on and take them off over boots without removing anything, and it means they add a layer of leather to the front and sides of the leg without the heat and bulk of a full second pair of trousers. They come from ranch work, where the front of the leg took thorns and brush while the seat stayed against a saddle.

How to size chaps

Because they go over trousers, measure over the trousers you intend to wear, not over bare legs. The two figures that matter are waist — where the belt will sit, over your clothing — and inside leg, measured from the crotch to where you want the hem, usually just over the boot.
