Why the leather has to be heavy for a spiked jacket

Every spike is a small weight held by a single point in the hide. On thin or split leather the metal slowly drags, the holes widen, and the panels start to pucker around each fitting. A spiked jacket only stays flat if the leather has enough substance to carry the load, which is why this one uses a heavier hide than a plain fashion jacket would need.

The spikes are fitted through the panel and closed on the reverse, not glued. Glued hardware comes off; set hardware stays. If a spike ever loosens with heavy wear it can be re-set rather than replaced.
