Why cowhide for this pattern

A vest takes more abrasion than a jacket does, because it rubs against a seat back constantly and gets layered over and under other things. Add a stitched back patch and the panel takes a permanent load too.

Built for patches

The back is a single clean panel with no seam running across it. That matters if colours or a large patch are going on: a seam through the middle makes stitching harder, the patch sits unevenly, and the seam becomes a weak line under the load.

The hide is heavy enough that a leather repair shop or tailor can stitch straight onto it without the panel distorting.

Build

Double-stitched seams with heavy polyester thread. Fasteners set through reinforced tabs rather than a single layer of hide, which is the single most common failure point on a cheaper vest. Hip pockets outside, an interior pocket inside the front, and bound armholes cut to clear a jacket sleeve.
