Zip versus busk
A traditional busk is a rigid steel front opening with hooks. A zip is faster to use, sits flatter under clothing, and gives an unbroken line where a busk shows a row of hooks. The trade-off is that a zip carries the tension of the closed corset across its whole length rather than at fixed hook points, so it must be a heavy-gauge zip properly stitched into a reinforced seam — which is why cheap zip corsets fail at the zip and good ones do not. The rear lacing takes most of the tension in either design; the zip is for getting in and out.
Looking after the zip
Two habits protect it. Always loosen the rear lacing before unzipping — opening a zip while the corset is still under full tension is the single thing that breaks it. And run a little candle wax or zip lubricant along the teeth once or twice a year so the slider does not drag. If a slider ever fails, it can usually be replaced without changing the whole zip.
