The two leather straps across the collar are the detail people ask about most. They are not decoration. At altitude, wind pressure would force a plain collar open at the throat, so the straps pull the collar closed and hold it there — turning a wide, warm collar into a sealed one.
On the ground they do the same job in wind. Buckled, the collar stands up and closes; unbuckled, it folds back and the jacket looks completely different. That single adjustment is why a B3 works in two quite different modes.
One material, two functions
Shearling is sheepskin with the wool still attached, tanned as one piece. Leather outside blocking wind, fleece inside trapping air, and no seam between them for cold to find. There is no separate lining because there does not need to be.
