What wears out a riding vest

Three things, and none of them are the leather itself. The seat back, which rubs continuously against the lower back panel every mile you ride. Bag and belt straps, which cut across the shoulders. And the fastenings, which take wind pressure at speed on top of being opened and closed daily.

All three are addressed in construction rather than in material: double-stitched seams with heavy polyester thread, reinforcement across the shoulders, and every fastening set through a backing tab so the load spreads instead of concentrating on one point of hide. None of that is visible. All of it is why the vest lasts.

Cut for riding

The armholes are set higher than on a fashion waistcoat, so the vest stays on the shoulders when you reach forward to the bars — a low armhole lets a vest creep backwards every time you move, which is the most common complaint about wearing one on a bike.

The back is cut slightly longer than the front, so it stays covering the lower back in a forward riding position rather than riding up at the waist.

The back panel

A single clean piece with no seam running across it. That matters if colours or a large patch are going on: stitching across a seam gives an uneven result and turns the seam into a weak line under the load of the patch. The hide is heavy enough for a leather repair shop or tailor to stitch straight onto it.

Fit and styling

Regular fit. Take your normal size over a shirt or t-shirt, and size up if it goes over a leather jacket — which is how most riders wear it. The armholes are cut to clear a jacket sleeve rather than binding on it.
