It comes directly out of the tradition of the personalised rock jacket — the ones covered in slogans, band names and warnings, built up by their owners over years.

Lettering and graphics on leather
Leather is a good ground for lettering because it is non-porous compared to woven fabric — ink and paint sit on the surface with hard edges rather than bleeding into a weave. Letters stay legible and colour stays saturated.
The tradition matters too. Slogans and warnings on the back of a jacket have forty years of history behind them; the same words printed on a nylon jacket read as merchandise rather than as something someone put there.
Studs alongside the artwork
The hardware is set through the hide and closed on the reverse rather than glued, which is what keeps it anchored. Placement sits around and between the graphic areas rather than over them — studs on top of lettering makes both illegible.
