Every patch you add puts permanent holes in the hide and a permanent load on the panel. A light vest deforms around a large back patch within a year — the panel stretches, the patch sits crooked, and the stitching line becomes a weak point.

The hide here is chosen heavy specifically to resist that. It takes a back patch, a set of shoulder patches and rows of pins without the panels pulling out of shape. A leather repair shop or tailor can stitch straight onto it.
