Handmade Women Leather Studded Vest
A studded vest is a different proposition from a studded jacket. There are no sleeves to carry hardware, so everything sits on the front panels and the shoulders where it is directly in view, and the vest has to be built firm enough to hold that metal without the panels rippling. This one is real leather with every stud set by hand and backed on the reverse.
Each stud is pushed through a punched hole in the hide and its prongs folded flat on the reverse against a backing washer. That washer is the whole difference in longevity — without it the prongs bear directly on the leather and saw through it as the vest flexes, until the stud works loose and leaves a hole.
Machine-pressed studding skips the washer because it is faster. Doing it by hand takes hours, which is why hand-studded pieces cost more and take longer to make. It is what you are paying for.
A vest has fewer panels than a jacket, so each one carries more hardware. On a soft lambskin the leather would stretch around every fixing and the panels would ripple within months. This uses a firmer leather with enough substance to hold studs flat while still softening with wear.
The vest is lined so no stud backing sits against you — on a sleeveless garment worn over a t-shirt that is not optional.
Studs run across the shoulders and down the front panels, following the shape of the vest rather than cutting across it. The back is left clearer, both so the vest is not impossibly heavy and so patches can be added if you want them.
The cut is a shaped women's pattern with higher armholes so it stays on the shoulder. Take your normal size over a top or thin knit. Studded panels have very little give, so size up if you plan to wear anything thicker underneath — this is the most common sizing mistake on studded pieces.
It is heavier than a plain vest and the studs will catch on knitwear, so hang it with space around it rather than crushing it into a wardrobe. Wear it with black jeans, boots and a plain top and let it be the whole outfit.
