Why size conversion is unreliable on leather
Size labels are not standardised between countries or between brands within a country. A US 4 from one label and a US 4 from another can differ by several centimetres at the chest — which is tolerable in a stretchy fabric and is not tolerable in leather, because hide has no give to absorb the difference.
The practical consequence is that ordering leather by size label alone is a gamble. Ordering by measurement is not.
