This shearling jacket has a suede-finished outer rather than a smooth one — the hide side is buffed to a soft matte nap instead of being left with a polished surface. It is a small production difference that changes the whole appearance of the jacket.

What a suede outer does
A smooth-finished shearling has a sealed surface that reflects light, which makes the jacket look harder and more formal — closer to a leather coat with fleece inside.
Buffing the outer to a nap changes that completely. Matte suede absorbs light rather than reflecting it, so the hide side reads soft and textural — much closer in feel to the fleece it is attached to. The result is a jacket that looks like one material throughout rather than leather outside and wool inside.
It is the reason suede-finished shearling looks warmer even before you put it on.
The care difference
This matters, because it is where suede shearling differs most from the smooth kind. A napped surface absorbs water and shows marks more readily than a sealed one, and it cannot simply be wiped down.
