The Men Jet Black Shearling Jacket is the most low-maintenance sheepskin jacket we make, and that is a more useful property than it sounds. A winter jacket takes more abuse than anything else in a wardrobe — rain, road salt, grit, bag straps — and black handles all of it better than any other finish.

Why black is the practical choice
Three reasons. It is the most colour-stable leather finish — dyed browns, tans and colours lighten under sustained sunlight where black holds. It hides marks: the grit and salt spray that show clearly on a tan hide are close to invisible on black. And scuffs on black leather read as sheen rather than as damage.
For a jacket you will wear through several winters and expect to look decent throughout, none of that is trivial.
What you are actually buying
Shearling is one sheepskin tanned with the fleece attached — leather outside blocking wind, wool inside trapping air, no separate lining and no seam between the two. It is the warmest construction in ordinary clothing and it has not been improved on for static cold.
Wool also keeps insulating when slightly damp, unlike down, which matters in a damp winter more than raw warmth ratings suggest.
Fit, wear and honest notes
Take your normal size — the pattern already allows for the fleece. It is heavy and substantial; both are the warmth.
