Why A-2 jackets are lined in plain fabric, not quilting

The original A-2 used a plain cotton lining, not a quilted or insulated one. That surprises people, because a jacket built for cold weather would seem to want insulation. The reason is that the A-2 was never meant to be the only layer — it was worn over a uniform and often under heavier flying kit, and the jacket's job was to block wind and seal warm air in with its knit trims, not to insulate on its own.
