How the side lacing works

Leather cord runs through eyelets down both side seams. Tightening draws the waist and chest in; loosening opens them out. It gives several inches of range on each side, which matters on a vest because you may wear it over a T-shirt in summer and over a shirt or a jacket in winter and want it to fit in both cases. Lace from the bottom upward, drawing the slack toward the top, then tie off — pulling only the top loops concentrates the tension on the uppermost eyelets, which is how eyelets tear out of leather.

The internal pockets

Two large pockets are set into the lining, one on each side, with reinforced openings and a stiffened backing panel so they hold a shaped object without sagging or printing through the leather.
