This is the updated take on the ladies biker vest — the traditional pattern with the proportions brought up to date. The body is cut slightly shorter, the shoulders are narrower, and the front line is cleaner, with less hardware than a classic riding waistcoat carries. The result works as a fashion piece as readily as a riding layer.

What has been updated

Three things. The body length is shortened so it ends at the high hip rather than covering it, which balances better with high-waisted trousers and skirts. The shoulder width is narrowed, so the vest reads as tailored rather than borrowed. And the front is kept clean, with minimal hardware, so it does not shout riding gear when worn on its own.

Build

Real leather chosen firm enough to hold its shape at the shoulders. A vest that sags at the shoulder after a year is one made from too soft a hide, which is why this uses a mid-weight leather rather than a light one.

Seams are double stitched with heavy polyester thread. Fasteners are set through reinforced tabs so they do not tear out of the hide — the point where cheap vests fail. Armholes are bound rather than left raw, and there is an interior pocket.

Cut for women

A women's pattern, not a men's vest sized down. Shaped side seams give the waist definition, and the armholes are set high enough that the vest stays on the shoulder rather than sliding backwards when you reach forward.

The back is a single clean panel with no seam across it, so patches can still be added if you want them.

Fit and styling

Take your normal size over a top or fine knit, and size up if it is going over a leather jacket. Armholes are cut to clear a jacket sleeve.
