Detailing hides errors. Zips, panels and belts break up the surface so an uneven seam or a mismatched panel disappears among them. On a clean jacket the eye follows the seam lines with nothing else to look at, so every join has to run true and the panels have to be cut from hide of matching weight and grain.

That is why the panels here come from clean, consistent sections rather than from whatever is left over on the skin, and why a plain jacket is a fair test of how a workshop actually works.
