Why gloss changes red

On a matte hide, red sinks in — you see the pigment. On a sealed gloss finish, you see the pigment plus everything reflecting off the surface, so the colour appears lighter on the highlights and much deeper in the folds. The result has far more contrast across the jacket than a matte red does.
