Why gloss changes red
On a matte hide, red sinks in — you see the pigment. On a sealed gloss finish, you see the pigment plus everything reflecting off the surface, so the colour appears lighter on the highlights and much deeper in the folds. The result has far more contrast across the jacket than a matte red does.
The practical consequence is that this jacket looks quite different depending on where you are. Under flat daylight it is a red jacket. Under indoor or evening lighting it is considerably more dramatic.
Caring for a coloured gloss finish
Two things to watch, and both are specific to this combination.
Scratches show more than on any other finish. A mark on matte leather blends into the texture; on gloss it interrupts a reflection, and on a bright colour it interrupts it visibly. Use a soft dry cloth only, never anything abrasive, and never a polish with grit in it.
And strong dyes lighten in sunlight faster than dark ones. Hang it out of a sunny window. Also avoid folding it hard — a sharp crease in a sealed finish can craze, which shows as a pale line and does not come out.
Wearing a jacket like this
