How brown shearling ages

Unlike black, brown sheepskin changes visibly over the years. The cuffs, front edges and collar lighten first as the surface takes handling, and the overall tone deepens. Within two or three winters the jacket has a depth of colour that a new one does not, which is the reason people who own shearling tend to keep it for decades.

Why sheepskin is warm

One skin doing two jobs. The hide side blocks wind completely; the wool side traps warm air against your body. Because both are the same piece of skin there is no separate lining to shift out of place, no seam for cold air to find, and no synthetic wadding to compress and lose loft.

That last point is the important one. A padded jacket loses warmth as its filling flattens; a sheepskin jacket does not, which is why it stays as warm in year ten as when new.

Fit and construction

Cut for a woman's frame — narrower shoulders and a body length that ends at the hip rather than below it. The collar is shearling rather than plain leather, so it is warm against the neck and can be turned up in wind.

Cuffs and hem are finished in sheepskin rather than knit ribbing, so there is no cold gap at the wrist or waist. Seams are stitched with heavy thread, which sheepskin needs because of its weight.

Weight and styling

Full sheepskin is heavy — several times the weight of a plain leather jacket. There is no light version of this material.
