The placement follows a rule: spikes go where the jacket is seen in silhouette, studs go where it is seen flat. So the cones run along the shoulder line and the lapel edges — the parts that break your outline — and the flat studs fill the chest and sleeve panels behind them.

Put them the other way round and the jacket looks cluttered from the front and flat from the side. The layout matters as much as the hardware itself.

Why cone spikes need proper fixing

A spike projects, which means every knock puts leverage on its fixing point — far more than a flat stud ever takes. Fixed straight into unbacked leather, a cone works its way loose and eventually tears through, leaving a hole that cannot be repaired invisibly.

Every spike here is set by hand through the hide and closed against a backing washer on the reverse, so the load spreads across metal rather than concentrating on the leather. That is the entire difference between a spiked jacket that lasts and one that does not.

Worth knowing before you order. Spikes catch — on knitwear, on car seats, on door frames, on other people's clothes. Hang the jacket on a wide hanger with clear space either side rather than crushing it into a wardrobe, and be conscious of it when you sit down or lean against something.
