Faux leather, said plainly

The shell is a coated fabric, not animal hide. It will not develop a patina, will not soften over years, and will not last as long as real leather — a coating eventually cracks at high-flex points rather than wearing thin.

Why the hood is fabric

A hood made from the same coated shell would be stiff, would not fold flat between the shoulders when down, and would be unpleasant against the head and hair. A soft fabric hood does all three properly.

The trade-off is that the hood is not water resistant the way the shell is — it will wet through in sustained rain. It is there for wind and light showers rather than as a substitute for a waterproof.

Fixed rather than removable

This hood is stitched in rather than detachable. That means a cleaner neckline than a jacket with fastening points around the collar, and no small parts to lose — but it also means you cannot take it off for a smarter look.

Care, which matters more on a coated shell

Heat is the enemy. Keep it away from radiators, never tumble dry it and never iron it — a hot iron will melt a coated finish on contact and the damage is permanent. Wipe the shell with a damp cloth rather than soaking it.

Treated properly a faux leather jacket gives several good seasons. Treated carelessly it can crack within one.
