Are Shearling Jackets Worth the Money?

A shearling jacket is worth it if you live somewhere genuinely cold and will wear it for years. It is the warmest jacket you can buy at its thickness, it lasts decades rather than seasons, and it improves with age. It is not worth it if your winters are mild, if you need something light, or if you want a jacket you can wear most of the year.

These are expensive pieces, so here is an honest look at both sides.

Why It Costs What It Costs

The hide itself. Shearling is a sheepskin tanned with the fleece still attached. That is a more complex process than tanning smooth leather, because the wool and the hide have to be treated together without damaging either. The material cost is substantially higher than plain leather.

Material used. A shearling jacket uses more hide than a smooth leather jacket of the same size, because the material is thicker and the panels have to allow for the wool's bulk.

Construction. Sewing thick shearling requires heavy machines and skilled operators. Seams have to be handled carefully so the wool does not bunch inside them.

No separate lining. The wool is the lining. That sounds like a saving but it is not, because the wool is the expensive part.

What You Actually Get

Warmth nothing else matches. Because the wool and the leather are one piece, there is no air gap between the shell and the insulation. Wool also holds heat while letting moisture escape, so you do not get the clammy feeling synthetic linings produce. This is the main argument and it is a strong one.

Windproofing. The leather outer blocks wind completely, which matters more than raw temperature in most winter conditions.

Longevity. A well made shearling jacket, cared for reasonably, lasts decades. Original wartime B3 jackets are still wearable eighty years on.

It improves. The leather develops a patina, the wool softens, and it moulds to your shape. It looks better at year ten than at year one.

The Honest Downsides

It is heavy. Considerably heavier than a down jacket of similar warmth. Some people never adjust to that.

It is bulky. You cannot pack it small, you cannot wear a slim silhouette in it, and it takes up real space in a wardrobe.

It is too warm most of the year. This is a genuine winter jacket, not a three season one. If your winter is mild, it will sit unused.

Wet weather is slow. The leather handles rain reasonably, but wool holds a lot of water and takes a long time to dry.

Cleaning is specialist. You cannot wash it, and standard dry cleaning strips the natural oils. You need a cleaner who specifically handles shearling.

Compared to the Alternatives

Versus a down jacket. Down is warmer for its weight and packs down small. Shearling is windproof without a shell, lasts far longer, and does not lose insulation when compressed or damp. Down is the technical choice, shearling is the durable one.

Versus a wool coat. A wool coat is lighter and more formal, but far less windproof. Shearling is considerably warmer in real conditions.

Versus faux shearling. Faux is much cheaper and much lighter, but noticeably less warm and it flattens permanently with wear, particularly at the collar and cuffs. Our comparison of shearling, sheepskin and faux shearling covers this.

Versus a lined leather jacket. A quilted leather jacket handles autumn and mild winter well and is far more versatile. If your winter rarely goes below freezing, this is probably the better buy.

Cost Per Wear

The maths only works if you actually wear it.

Say you wear a shearling jacket sixty days a year for fifteen years. That is nine hundred wearings, and the cost per wear becomes very low, lower than a mid range coat replaced every four years.

But if you live somewhere with three genuinely cold weeks a year, you get twenty wearings a year, and the maths looks very different. Be honest about your climate before you spend.

Who Should Buy One

Worth it if: your winter is properly cold, you spend real time outdoors in it, you want a jacket for the next fifteen years, or you already own lighter jackets and need the warm one.

Not worth it if: your winter is mild, you want something light and packable, you need one jacket to cover all seasons, or you mainly move between heated buildings and cars.

If You Do Buy One

Size up. The wool takes up real internal space and you need room for a jumper. Our guide on how a B3 shearling jacket should fit covers this.

Order early. These are made to order and one of the more involved pieces we build. Ordering in October means it arrives before you need it.

Check it is real. On genuine shearling, the leather and wool are continuous at a cut edge because they are one piece. On faux you will see pile fabric stop and a separate backing begin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are shearling jackets worth the money?

Yes if your winters are genuinely cold and you will wear it for years, because it is the warmest jacket at its thickness and lasts decades. No if your winters are mild or you want something light and versatile.

Why are shearling jackets so expensive?

Tanning a hide with the fleece attached is more complex than tanning smooth leather, the jackets use more material, and sewing thick shearling requires heavy machines and skilled operators.

How long does a shearling jacket last?

Decades with reasonable care. Original wartime B3 jackets from the 1940s are still wearable today.

Is shearling warmer than down?

Down is warmer for its weight. Shearling is windproof without a shell, does not lose insulation when compressed or damp, and lasts far longer.

Can you wear a shearling jacket every day?

Only in genuinely cold weather. It is too warm for mild conditions, so it works as a winter coat rather than an everyday jacket.

Is faux shearling a reasonable alternative?

It is much cheaper and lighter, but noticeably less warm and it flattens permanently with wear. Fine as a fashion jacket, not a substitute in real cold.

How do you clean a shearling jacket?

Brush the wool with a soft brush and spot clean the leather side. Never machine wash, and only dry clean with a specialist who handles shearling.

Deciding

Be honest about your climate first. If it is genuinely cold, this is the best winter jacket you can buy. If it is not, a lined leather jacket will serve you better.
